Why can't we have more trains?
We get this question a lot. There's a history here, but mostly the answer boils down to governmental action. Or lack of.
There is a broad public support for investment in the railroad network. Yet - as in so many areas of public policy - public support hasn't always translated to public policy.
Consider now how important government support is. Amtrak depends on help from Vermont to run the Ethan Allen and
Vermonter. Almost all of the Vermont Rail System is on state owned track that would
have been abandoned had it not been for the state's foresight. Vermont invests in it's rail network and should do more. And government policy, such as the new Vermont farm crossing
bill has the potential to aid or cripple railroads.
The road lobby has been well organized. They've succeeded in altering our very society to favor truck and automobile transport.
Railroads need a constituency. The Vermont Rail Action Network was formed to educate rail supporters, the public and public officials. By joining our voices we can create that successful voice.
To be effective, rail supporters need a unified "ask." We need to work out together what is most important and what our message is. Conflicting messages will confuse the public and legislators. A unified voice brings power to our goals. The Vermont Rail Action Network will facilitate this.
To be effective, rail supporters need timing. The Vermont Rail Action Network will let you know when important issues are before the legislature and when your communication is important. We'll make the phones ring when the issue is current.
